Bedhaya…was written while I was living in Central Java, Indonesia. It uses an early version of my HMSL morphing software. It was commissioned for and premiered by the Astra Chamber Society in Melbourne, in its original version for large chorus, Javanese gamelan, kemanak, and instrumental and vocal soloists. It uses two tunes: one by Woody Guthrie ("Rangers' Command"), and another written at my invitation by composer Wayan Sadra. The computer software morphs the two tunes back and forth in a number of ways. Bedhaya is modular–any subset of the morphing trajectories may be performed, and the instrumentation may vary. The score and an accompanying theoretical article was published in Perspectives of New Music, 1996.
After Gamelan Son of Lion performed the work in New York in 1991, composer/clarinetist Daniel Goode made a solo clarinet arrangement, bringing together a number of his favorite melodies from the larger work, and performing it in pelog. Dan and I recorded this version a few years later during a residency at P.A.S.S./Harvestworks in New York City.
