The Casten Variation

The Casten Variation is a computer-composed work, an analysis/resynthesis of Ruth Crawford's "Piano Study in Mixed Accents". My software (written in HMSL) analyzed the Crawford piece, trying to measure the similarity between every pair of melodies in it. The software then created a new piece whose melodies share those original similarities. "The Casten Variation" is, in some strange way, the same as the "Piano Study"… although it is six times as long, has a wider pitch range, and has no notes in common.

The work exists in two forms, for solo piano and for ensemble. The Piano version is dedicated to Sarah Cahill.
