about

These four short piano pieces were performed and recorded live on a Yamaha Disklavier, an electronically controlled-grand piano. The piano was controlled by my computer system, which was running a software instrument called "Farabi," which I had previously developed for another situation. This instrument calculates sequences whose properties I can change as they are played, using knobs and switches (in this performance I never touched the piano keys). My controls allow me to select from a range of melodic and rhythmic modes, as well as selecting tessitura and tempi for the computer to use in computing its sequences. I was originally disappointed with this performance, but it's grown on me with repeated listenings: there is something charming, to my ear at least, about the distinctly non-human graces and awkwardnesses in this music.
