Choir/Empi’s Solo

from CHANGE (ART 1023, 2002) by Larry Polansky

about

(1997)

Choir…is a continuous, gradual modulation–or harmonic morph–through three closely related harmonic series. Harmonics from one series "replace" close harmonics from the previous series in a simple way.

Choir…consists of many recordings of Empi's voice. She and I wrote software that used precisely tuned samples to compose the details of harmonic modulation. We each wrote a few solo voice lines, tuned to the harmonic series, which emphasize the cadential points in the work (the emergence of each complete harmonic series). These solo lines, sung live in performance, are overdubbed on this CD.

Choir…is the most recent in a series of similar pieces begun in 1978 with "Psaltery" (for Lou Harrison), which appeared on my Artifact CD "The Theory of IMpossible Melody". Another piece in this series is "Horn", which is on the Artifact CD "Simple Harmonic Motion".
