about

The Invention pieces on this recording are relatives of the network music installation recordings on my Talking Drum 2005 Pogus CD release. They are all studies in polyrhythm, using rhythmic cycles with different numbers of beats playing at the same time. In polyrhythmic music, a played rhythm has multiple meanings in relation to each cycle, giving the feeling of being pulled simultaneously towards more than one center. I composed the pieces using the computer to teach myself to play inside each rhythmic puzzle, exploring extended temporal relationships that I might otherwise never be able to play. The computer responds to my playing using a genetic algorithm, “breeding” responses that mutate between what it is programmed to play (its “clave”), and what I last played, or what it played further in the past. It’s a feedback process in which I’m influencing it, and it’s influencing me, as the music evolves. — Chris Brown

CHRIS BROWN, composer, pianist, and electronic musician, makes music with self-designed sonic systems that include acoustic and electroacoustic instruments, interactive software, computer networks, microtonal tunings, and improvisation. His compositions are designs for performances in which people bring to life the musical structures embedded in scores, instruments, and machines. cbmuse.com
